Selfmade

3/2/2018

SelfMade is a platform to explore DIY music in Ireland through performance, discussion, and art, with a strong focus on inclusion in music. Our goal is to celebrate the work of DIY musicians and to create a supportive space to explore the realities of getting a music career off the ground.

The first event in February 2018 focused on the experiences of eight female fronted acts who are making waves in the music industry. Women are under-represented at all levels in music, and Selfmade wanted to use their first event as a platform to hear from women who have pushed beyond this barrier. Selfmade know their stories and experiences will be valuable to people of all genders. The evening was a mix of artwork, acoustic performance, discussion and zines showcasing an intersection of music from Irish artists and celebrating the work behind the scenes. The event feature pieces from contributing illustrators, as well as a panel discussion chaired by vocalist, Jess Kavanagh (BARQ).

SelfMade is organised independently by artist and music enthusiast, Joanna Bain, and Julie Hawk (HAWK / Veta Records) in collaboration with a collective of Irish musicians.
Photography on the night was by the incredibly talented Olga Kuzmenko. Some of the evening's photos can be seen here

IMRO and Trad Fest

I was delighted to be asked to play at the IMRO seminar for Festival and Touring during Trad Fest where we got to listen to and meet festival and musical directors from Merlefest, Milwaukee irish Festival, Celtic Colours Festival and Philadelphia Folk Festival!

Celtic Connections - Glasgow

Then it was off to Glasgow for a flying visit to play at the Danny Kyle Stage at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall!  I got to hang out with my friend Horse McDonald, who very kindly collected me from the airport and loaned me her guitar and we got to catch up.  And I played a 20 minute set for a huge listening audience! Happy days!

Then I got to hang out with Dave Arcari and Margaret McDonald who I met in Vienna!  They took me home with them to their gorgeous home in Balmaha and took me out for a walk around Loch Lomond and got to see the beautiful Ben Lomond topped in snow!
